Although the game of futsal was already popularised in Europe, the home nations quickly caught up with their counterparts by partaking in club and international competitions.  It is hard to determine which UK club was the first to taste the finer elements of futsal for some were uncertain whether they were taking part in a 5-a-side tournament!  

2000 (Est)

A few English clubs have been partaking in futsal competitions on the Continent such as Bexley, Derby and Croydon. Since the law of futsal were not well received, they would often retort to playing under the 5-a-side rules!

Both Great Britain Men’s and Women’s participated in the 1st European Futsal Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.  The Women’s finished 6th place overall whilst the Men’s were placed 9th overall.

Debut For England

John Atkinson made his international debut for England futsal in Kaunas, Lithuania. He went on to make seven appearances in all.

England, under the guidance of the FA, made their debut at the 2nd European Futsal Championships in Moscow, Russia.  The Women’s won the silver, losing 2-0 to the hosts, Russia. The Men’s missed out in the knock out stages and finished 9th overall.

World Futsal Championships

England Women’s team participated in the 2nd World Futsal Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. They gained the bronze beating Norway 5-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in extra time.

The Men’s team were unsuccessful; they could only muster 10th place overall.

Funding Hiccups

For reasons unknown, the FA decided to not fund the Deaf Men’s Futsal, however, they continued funding the Deaf Women’s Futsal. This explained that why England Deaf Men’s team did not participate in European Championships.

England Women’s Futsal team participated in the 3rd World Deaf Futsal Championship at Orebro, Sweden. They finished a creditable 5th place overall.

4th European Championship

England Deaf Women’s Futsal team were automatically qualifiers for the 4th European Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. They won the Bronze match game, beating Spain.

A Busy Year

A busy year, there were two mini-tournaments for the 5thEuropean Deaf Championships.

England Women’s team travelled to Olso, Norwary to take on Poland, Turkey and hosts – Norway. They were successful, winning 2 games and drawing one; this assured them of qualification to the 2018 Europeans at Tampere, Finland.

The England Men’s team were also successful in Switzerland; in the 3 games there, they emerged were unbeaten.

FA Declared Withdrawing Their Funding

England Women’s Futsal team qualify for the 5th World Championship at Winterthur, Switzerland. Alas, in the spring of 2019, the FA declared withdrawing their funding support to both Men’s and Women’s futsal. It was a heartbreaking moment for all concerned.

England Women’s team make a valiant effort to enter the Worlds but could not manage to raise the necessary funds. And they reluctantly had to withdraw from the competition. In hindsight, there was a lack of transparency and communications from the sporting hierarchies involved.

This was the first tournament that England Deaf Women’s team had failed to participate since it had started.

At the ICSD Congress in Milan (during the Winter Deaflympics 2019), it was announced that futsal would the admitted to the 2023 Winter Deaflympics programme.

 Great Britain Men’s Football made their historical debut in a four-team tournament in Belgium. And they finish 2nd overall beating France 7-6, Germany 9-3 and losing to the hosts 10-5.

Tournament At Haarlem In Netherland

Great Britain Deaf Futsal finish second overall in a four-team tournament at Haarlem, Netherland beating Belgium and Portugal but losing to Netherlands.

Getting The Hang Of It

Doncaster College won the Yorkshire Regional Futsal League and then go on to capture the National Futsal title at the 2nd Futsal National Nationals at Sheffield

Doncaster College entered the UEFA Futsal 4-team Mini Tournament in Andorra. Although they did not progress, they nevertheless managed to win one game

Both Daniel Hogan and John Atkinson represented the British Universities in Czech Republic.

Lads Back In Action

The FA decided to resume funding England Deaf Men’s Futsal. And they took part in a 4-team mini-tournament as a qualifier for the 4th European Championships.  They missed out on qualifying for the main competition, losing to both Russia and France. Their only win was against hosts Norway. 

This setback prevented from also missing out on the 2015 World Deaf Futsal Championship in Thailand.

As a result of their success at the 2014 Europeans, England Deaf Women’s Futsal team automatically qualified for the 4th World Championship in Bangkok, Thailand. Although England did not feature in the medals, they came home with plenty of encouragement and credit.

FA Announcement

The FA make an announcement that funding is to cease for all England National Futsal Teams – Under 19, Under 23 and Men’s Senior teams.

Without the auspices of the FA, England Deaf International Futsal has formed with roles on an interim period. And they provisionally enter the 2022 European Futsal Championships.
